How to Spot a Fake "Limited Time" Offer
The countdown says 14 minutes left. Refresh the page and it says 14 minutes again. How fake urgency works, how to spot it, and why I don't use it.

You land on a sales page. There's a big red countdown at the top. 14 minutes, 59 seconds. Price goes up when it hits zero. Only 3 spots left.
Your heart rate goes up a little. That's the whole point.
Now refresh the page.
If the timer starts over at 14:59, you just learned everything you need to know about that offer.
Why fake urgency works
When people feel rushed, they skip the part where they think. They stop comparing, stop reading the fine print, stop asking whether they need the thing at all. Fake deadlines are built to get you to buy before your judgment catches up.
The FTC has a name for tricks like this. It calls them dark patterns, and a 2022 FTC staff report on them lists false urgency, like fake countdown timers and fake "only a few left" messages, as one of the common ones.
How to spot it
- Refresh the page. If the countdown resets, it's fake.
- Open it in a private window or on your phone. Same timer? Different timer? Either way, it's telling you something.
- Come back tomorrow. If the "last chance" offer is still there at the same price, it was never the last chance.
- Watch for "spots left" on digital stuff. A download doesn't run out. A video course doesn't have a fire code.
- Watch for "someone in Ohio just bought this" pop-ups. Some are real. Plenty are not.
Real deadlines exist
Not every deadline is fake. A live event happens on one date. A real sale ends when it says it ends, and stays ended. A workshop with real seats has a real limit. The difference is that a real deadline is still true when you check it.
Why I don't use them
Everything I sell has a price and a description, and the price is the same tomorrow. If something is good, you'll still want it after you think it over. If it isn't, I'd rather you didn't buy it.
Below is a fake timer, built the way a lot of them really are. Hit the refresh button and watch.
